Shirakawa-go — quiet in the mountains

Beyond Kanazawa the road climbs into a valley, and the journey arrives at Shirakawa-go — a village of steep-roofed Gassho-zukuri farmhouses held between quiet mountains.

This is where the pace drops. Walk the village lanes, look closely at the old houses, and meet a different Japan altogether: plain, still, and lived close to the land.
