A September afternoon, and an easy ride along the shore of Lake Yamanaka. The road turns, and there it is again: Mt. Fuji, doubled in water so still it holds the mountain whole.
Your car is waiting when you have had enough of the saddle. It carries you to Oshino Hakkai, a village of thatched roofs and clear spring-fed ponds drawn from the mountain itself. Then the Koshu vineyards, heavy with fruit, and the cool, quiet rooms of wineries and sake breweries that have worked here for generations.
The day's cooking begins in your hands: a workshop with a local artisan, rolling and cutting Hoto noodles, then eating them at a table facing Mt. Fuji. Afterwards, the hot mineral water of an onsen.
Nikko is the pause in the journey. Heritage shrines stand quietly among old-growth forest, and your breathing slows to match the place.
The time here is given over to rest, before the journey changes tempo for the capital.
The city holds its older selves close. You begin at the Imperial Palace, then walk without hurry through Senso-ji in Asakusa, under its great red lantern, where the manners of Edo are still visible in the streets around it.
As the afternoon fades, the journey shifts to Shibuya. You greet Hachiko, then rise to the open deck of Shibuya Sky to watch the sunset colour the city and the lights come on across the Scramble Crossing.
The final morning is yours alone: the avenues of Ginza, whatever shopping tempts you, and then a private transfer to the airport.
Eating well runs through the whole journey: sashimi cut from fish landed that morning, and wagyu of the highest grade that gives way at the first touch.
